Turn Any Picture into a Photo Made of Photos
Upload a main photo and a set of small photos — this tool rebuilds the big picture entirely out of the little ones, matched by color. Everything runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
1. Main photo
The big picture viewers see from a distance — a portrait works beautifully.

JPG or PNG, any size
2. Tile photos
The small photos the mosaic is built from. More variety means better color matches — 50 or more is ideal.
No tile photos yet.
3. Adjust
The mosaic rebuilds automatically when you move a slider.
More columns means smaller tiles and a sharper likeness, but takes longer.
A faint overlay of the original photo that sharpens the likeness.
Private by design: your photos are processed locally with canvas and never leave this device. No watermarks, no accounts, no uploads.
How to Make a Photo Mosaic
- Add your main photo. Click the dropzone (or drag a picture onto it). Portraits and high-contrast shots give the most striking mosaics.
- Add tile photos. Press Upload tile photos and select as many as you like — hold Ctrl (or Cmd) to pick dozens at once. Colorful, varied pictures match best. In a hurry? Press Generate sample tiles to try the tool instantly with 96 procedurally made tiles.
- Tune the sliders. Mosaic detail sets how many tiny photos span the width (24–96). Blend original fades a ghost of the main photo over the mosaic for extra clarity. The mosaic rebuilds live as you drag.
- Download your PNG. Press Download PNG to save a print-ready image (up to about 2200px on the long edge). Share it, print it, frame it.
Worked example
You upload a portrait as the main photo and 80 holiday snaps as tiles, with detail at 48 columns. The tool measures the average color of each of the 48 × 60 grid cells, finds the holiday photo with the closest average color for every cell, and assembles the mosaic — then a 25% blend of the portrait sharpens the face. The result downloads as a 1344 × 1680 PNG: a portrait from across the room, eighty memories up close.
About This Photo Mosaic Maker
What this photo mosaic maker does
A photo mosaic — a picture made of photos — is a single image composed of hundreds or thousands of tiny photographs arranged in a grid. From a distance you see the main subject, a face or a landscape. Step closer, however, and every cell resolves into a complete little photo whose average color matches that spot of the big picture.
This free online photo mosaic maker builds true photomosaics with real math, not a filter. First, your main photo is divided into a grid of 24 to 96 columns. Next, the average red-green-blue color of each cell is measured, and the same measurement is taken for every tile photo you provide. Each cell is then filled with the tile whose color sits closest in RGB space — the smallest squared color distance. Finally, an optional blend of the original photo is laid over the top to sharpen the likeness.
How the photo mosaic math works
Two sliders put you in charge of the look. Mosaic detail sets how many tiny photos span the width, from 24 for a bold poster feel to 96 for fine detail. The blend control, meanwhile, fades a ghost of the original over the finished grid. Every change rebuilds the mosaic live, so you can watch it refine as you drag. Everything happens locally in your browser with the HTML canvas element, so there are no uploads, no queues and no watermarks. As a result, the finished mosaic downloads as a full-resolution PNG you own outright.
Why a photo mosaic makes the perfect gift
A mosaic turns an ordinary photograph into a keepsake with a second layer of meaning. Anniversary and wedding gifts, family posters, team collages, memorial prints and scroll-stopping social posts all hit harder when the big picture is literally built from the memories inside it. For example, a portrait of your children assembled from a hundred family moments beats any off-the-shelf frame.
Because the tiles are your own photos, the result is personal in a way no preset can copy. In addition, because the matching is color-driven, even abstract subjects like pets, cars and landscapes resolve beautifully. Doing it in the browser also matters for privacy: many free mosaic apps quietly upload your entire camera roll to a server, whereas here nothing ever leaves your device.
Unlike phone apps that watermark exports or charge to unlock full resolution, this tool is free end to end. Experiment with the detail and blend sliders as much as you like, then download a print-ready file and make something worth framing. It is also a genuinely fun group activity: gather photos from friends after a trip, a wedding or a season of matches, build the mosaic together, and let everyone hunt for their own pictures hidden inside the final print. Frequently Asked Questions
-
Are my photos uploaded to a server?
No. This photo mosaic maker runs entirely in your browser using local canvas processing. Your main photo and tile photos never leave your device, and the tool keeps working offline once the page has loaded.
-
How many small photos do I need for a good mosaic?
Aim for at least 50 tile photos with varied colors: landscapes, portraits, food, pets, anything colorful. More variety gives closer color matches and a sharper result. You can also press Generate sample tiles to try the tool instantly.
-
What does the blend slider do?
Blend overlays a faint copy of your original photo on top of the mosaic. Higher values make the main subject clearer from a distance, while lower values keep the individual tile photos more visible. Around 20 to 30 percent is the sweet spot for most pictures.
